Message from JSPS's Director

The Beijing Officeof the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), as JSPS's 10th overseas research and liaison center, was founded in April 2007. As Japan's largest foundation sponsoring scientific research activities, JSPS was restructured into an independent administrative institution in 2003, and subsequently conducted a wide range of science promotion activities in the following areas: scientific research grants-in-aid program aiming to support innovative research activities of universities and research institutes, special researcher program aiming to foster top-class young researchers, international academic exchange programs, and sponsorship programs supporting the reform and internationalization of universities.

To facilitate international academic exchanges, JSPS launched researcher dispatching and recruitment programs, bilateral and multilateral cooperation programs and overseas office programs. Of these programs, the researcher exchange and recruitment program contributed substantially to the international exchange of researchers all over the world, and received positive feedback. While carrying out cooperation programs with other countries, JSPS, aiming to make Asia a scientific and technological research community matching Europe and America,  has accelerated the implementation of exchange programs with contracted universities, Asian and African science infrastructure programs, Japan-China-Korea forward-looking programs and Asia scientific and technological community strategy program. In addition, within the context of keen competition among global universities, Japan's grants programs sponsoring the internationalization process of universities are showing an increasing importance.

In order to further promote the development of Sino-Japanese exchanges in science, and help Japanese universities further exchange programs in China, JSPS Beijing Office conducted a wide range of activities, including: accelerating the implementation of JSPS international exchange programs, building a cooperative network system for Japanese and Chinese universities, research institutes and science promoting agencies, planning and sponsoring science forums and symposiums and summer school, assisting with and sponsoring the internationalization of Japanese universities, and disseminating latest information on Sino-Japanese science exchanges via homepage (in Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Currently totally 28 universities have set up their overseas offices in China. The interest of Japanese universities in Chinese market is rising.

Nowadays, countries all over the world are striving to achieve a sustainable economic and social development, and solve such global problems as environment, energy, grain, and resource issues and infectious diseases. Under such context, universities, as the reform and innovation centers, are becoming increasingly important. When China, Japan and even the whole world face the challenge of these global issues, the university-centered Sino-Japanese joint research efforts will play an indispensable role in leading the world's frontier researches. The advancement in Sino-Japanese joint researches will realize the goal of su5velopment for both countries. Young researchers of universities including postgraduates now play an extreme important role in the joint research activities in frontier fields. For this reason, it is necessary and imperative to give far more exchange opportunities to Japanese and Chinese young researchers, and give full play to their talents. JSPS Beijing Office will be committed to promoting the implementation of imperative Sino-Japanese joint research programs and the exchanges of research fellows and students between two countries, through building a cooperative network system for Chinese and Japanese universities, research institutes and science promoting agencies, and planning and implementing relevant programs.

To this end, I ask all of you for your support and cooperation
